Synopsis
Nobody Owens is a normal child, if it wasn't for the fact he lives in a Graveyard. The story begins with a man called Jack (usually referred to as 'The Man Jack'), walks into a house with a family of four and kills them one after the other, except one. A toddler just new to walking escapes the house and travels up the road to the local cemetery. The Man Jack later follows the toddler up the road but has no success in finding him, as a man (later to be identified as Silas) convinces The Man Jack that there is no baby in the graveyard. The Man Jack then walks back down the hill and disappears.
Silas then goes to see if they will let the baby (who Silas has hidden from The Man Jack) stay and have the Freedom of the graveyard. They decide to let him stay and have the freedom of the graveyard meaning he has the ability to be hidden from humans and the ability to see in the dark. Mr and Mrs Owens take the baby in as their own little boy giving him the name Nobody Owens (usually referred to as 'Bod') simply because he looks like nobody but himself.
He grows up into a little boy, about the age of 6 when he makes his first human friend and her name is Scarlett. She helps bod with reading and writing as they go around the graveyard and read and say and write down the names of the tomb stones of the dead people in the graveyard. Scarlett is special as she is human but is still able to see bod even tho other humans cannot. The go on an adventure together deep into a mountain too see if they can find one of the oldest if not the oldest person buried in the graveyard. They make it down and come across a man that calls himself 'The Indigo Man'. Bod and Scarlett realise the Indigo Man is not real and he disappears. They then find out it was just an image been projected by The Sleer and is only around when there is extreme fear. The Sleer has been waiting for thousands of years for its "Master" to come and reclaim him. A couple days later Scarlett and her family then decide to move to Scotland due to her dads work.
After a period of time Bod is captured by some ugly creatures that are known as Ghouls. They tell Bod they want to take him to Ghulheim and turn him into a Ghoul. He is rescued by his tutor Miss Lupescu which Bod discovers is a 'Hound of God' (i.e. a werewolf). He then becomes friends with Elizabeth Hempstock which is a witch buried outside the graveyard. Bod decides he wants to attend a school outside the graveyard so he does but it ends in a disaster as two bullies make it impossible for Bod to maintain a low profile. The Man Jack after all this time is supposably is still looking for Bod to finish his mission on killing Bod. The Man Jack is part of a secret society called 'The Jack of All Trades'.
Bod is now 14 years of age and Silas and Miss Lupescu are leaving to attend some business. Scarlett and her mother decide to move back as Scarlett's parents had divorced so Scarlett and Bod could reunite. Scarlett had made friends with a historian that is living in Bod's old house. His name is Mr. Jay Frost. Bod goes back to his old house to see if he can find out more about what had happened to his family. Mr. Jay Frost takes Bod to his old room revealing that he in fact is The Man Jack, Jack Frost is his true, full name. Jack Frost along with 4 others attack Bod and Scarlett but they escape to the graveyard where bod defeats each one of them except for Jack Frost. Jack Frost takes Scarlett captive in the chamber of The Sleer. Bod tricks Jack Frost into saying he is The Sleer's "Master". The Sleer consumes Jack Frost in an "embrace" and they disappear into the wall.
Silas returns to the graveyard and it is revealed that Silas and Miss Lupescu are both members of the Honor Guard, devoted to protecting "the borders between things. Though they succeed in
destroying the society, Miss Lupescu is killed in battle and brings deep sadness to Bod and Silas.
Scarlett is disgusted by the actions of the night. Silas suggests that removing the memories of that night from Scarlett's mind would be best. So that is what they do. In the final chapter of the book Bod is now grown and is now losing the Freedom of the Graveyard and even his ability to see ghosts. At the end of the book Silas gives Bod money and a passport with the name, says his good bye to his family and friends and then leaves the graveyard to go and start his new life.
